So I watched the first three episodes of Gurren Lagann today, I stopped there because I've heard the 4th episode sucks and I didn't feel like watching it.
Ok, so I hated the first episode. They didn't want to explain much of anything and the entire episode consisted of characters yelling.
The second episode was ok, much better than the first. And I actually liked the third episode, so my guess is that this show will grow on me. I'm not a huge mecha fan, but this is better than a lot of the other mecha anime I've watched (although I like a few of the Gundam series).
Kamina is cool, though he goes over-the-top too much for my tastes. I do find his pep talks of masculinity amusing. His personality + No-dachi makes me think that Kikuchiyo from Seven Samurai may have been an inspiration.
Yoko is cool, she isn't really developed in the first three episodes, so I can't comment too much on her. Also Gainax is sexist, they don't even try to hide it.
Simon is a pussy. I'm assuming he gets better, right now he is whiny and mopey.

I accidentally deleted Prinny-O's reply... I'm the worst Admin ever.

Well you basically said that the show as in its entirety is really good, that I probably won't like the 4th episode, the beach episode, and the hot springs episode. Also Gainax makes a lot of shows about little kids growing up and that I'll like Simon better as the show progresses.
I already like Simon way more than Shinji, but that isn't saying much.
But once again, I'm an awful Admin, I'm not use to the level of power that a message board with 2 members brings!

I've watched up to episode 14 and I've realized that I have an irrational hatred for one of the characters. I hate his voice, I hate his face, I hate his antics. This guy can burn in hell:

I think they were trying to make the cast a little more diverse, so they have characters like the big dark-skinned guy, the homo, and this guy- the retard. He's like a cross between Animal from the Muppets, Where's Waldo, and a tunafish.

Did I say retard? I meant to say "differently abled" or "minimally exceptional IQ." My bad.

I realize there is no reason for me to dislike him I just do. I do find his voice annoying so that may be it.
Also the Spiral King is badass. First he decides that his gunman is an inconvenience and fights without it, then he gets a huge hole blown through his chest and decides that he will still finish his dialogue.
Edit: No worries, I doubt anyone is offended. And I doubt the forum will be deleted due to it.

I mean differently abled persons. You know who you are. Yes and I agree with that assessment. Just keep watching, it gets worse for the Spiral King later (like he's missing some parts) but he still manages to be one of the most effective characters.

He comes back If he does then I think he is officially the most badass character ever.
I thought he was dead!
I'm already to the 7 years later part. Pretty cool so far, I like how Rossiu is walking the same path that he once condemned in his old village.

Hooray for hypocrisy! Yeah he keeps getting worse too, I almost wish all the prick was doing after the time skip was smearing some suntan lotion on Simon like in that picture. Well I go to bed and I will arise later like the Spiral King before me mwah ha ha.

Jake, let us know when you've finished the series, because I'm sure you already have, but I don't want to spoil anything.
What I can provide, though, is more Gurren Lagann type stuff. Go to YouTube and search for Gurren Lagann Parrallel Works. They are several videos officially released by Gainax, should be about 8 in total, and they were pretty much music videos featuring Gurren Lagann as if it were a different style or genre. One is a fantasy retelling of the show, while one of my favorites is the one that shows the humans as the villians, and Kamina as the mastermind of the beastmen's destruction. But I'll post this one, Jake, because I know how much you like Lord Genome. I believe this is actually the only video of the series that is canon, too.
And Jake, please don't delete this post, since you don't seem to like what I have to say about Gurren Lagann.

I actually haven't finished the series yet, I've been too busy with school. I crashed into slumber when I got home yesterday. I have a night class today, so I'll probably finish it tomorrow.
Those videos sound really cool, I'll have to watch them.
Lordgenome and Kamina are defenitely my two favorite characters.

Yeah, definitely watch the videos once you can. I know 1-7 don't give anything away about the ending, but I'm not completely sure about the video I posted here. It's more backstory of Lord Genome than anything, but I forget if it parallels with anything that happens at the end of the series. Oh, and you can skip number 7. It's kind of weird scenes in the desert, with no actual people in it. And it's not animated, it's just videos of the desert. It's nice to watch for the scenery and music, but that's about it.

Ok so I finished Gurren Lagann tonight. Easily the best anime I've watched recently. I loved it. The final four episodes were truly epic (kind of like in Wolf's Rain). The Anti-Spiral was awesome. Lordgenome and Kittan both got amazing deaths. Oddly enough my three favorite characters died in the show (Kamina, Lordgenome, and Kittan in no particular order... ok Kittan is last of those three). The ending was ok, could've been better. All in all I'd say it goes into my list of favorite animes, and I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to them.
So, now that everyone has seen it we can discuss the show. Like who is everyone's favorite character(s)? Favorite moments and so on? What did everyone else think of the ending?
